1️⃣ You overthink kindness.
When someone is kind to you, do you feel uncomfortable or overanalyse their actions?
You might think it’s just your personality, but it could be because you’re not used to genuine kindness. If you’ve experienced neglect or abuse, your mind might be trained to question why someone would treat you with compassion. This can leave you feeling uneasy, because kindness can feel unfamiliar or even suspicious.
2️⃣ You apologise too much.
Ever find yourself saying “sorry” even when you haven’t done anything wrong? This isn’t just a bad habit - it’s likely a defense mechanism. If you grew up in an environment where you were blamed for things you didn’t do, your brain learned to take the blame to avoid conflict. Now, apologising is automatic, even in situations where it’s not needed, because your system is still conditioned to believe it’s your fault.
3️⃣ You can’t remember your childhood.
Does it sometimes feel like your childhood is a blank slate? You’re not forgetful - you might be experiencing something called dissociation. Your brain has pushed those memories away as a coping mechanism, a survival tactic. The trauma might have been so overwhelming that your mind suppressed those painful experiences so you could keep going. It’s not that you don’t remember - it’s that your brain is protecting you from reliving the past.
4️⃣ You can’t accept compliments.
When someone gives you a compliment, do you feel like you don’t deserve it or brush it off as “being humble”? It’s not about humility - it’s about self-worth. If you’ve been hurt or neglected in the past, you may not believe the good things people are saying about you. It’s hard to accept praise when you’ve been conditioned to believe you aren’t worthy of it.
